Account Managers are investment professionals who have a broad range of responsibilities that include monitoring portfolios and communicating strategies, providing information about performance attribution, market performance and macroeconomic conditions, outlining the firm's current outlook and strategy, developing investment objectives, and educating clients about a broad set of investment strategies, products and services. Account managers specialize in the following areas:
Account Associates/Analysts play a dynamic role based on the core responsibility of servicing PIMCO's institutional clients. The Analyst's primary responsibility is to support PIMCO's client-servicing professionals to ensure delivery of the highest level of service to our clients. Analysts gather, analyze and discuss economic and fixed income trends, evaluate portfolio structures, and deliver attribution analyses to investment professionals and their clients.
The Business Development Support group plays an integral part in the initial sales/marketing process to prospective clients, as well as in the servicing of PIMCO's existing clients and investment consultants worldwide. The BDS team works closely with PIMCO's investment professionals, especially with Product Managers and Account Managers, to provide superior client servicing.
The Business Development Research (BDR) Group serves as a centralized market intelligence hub dedicated to cultivating new and existing client facing opportunities through business flow analysis, competitor research, financial market research and prospect research. Using analytical systems and proactive research initiatives, BDR strives to provide solutions-oriented results to PIMCO's Client Management Group and external contacts (investment consultants/clients).
Within the Global Wealth Management division at PIMCO, the Internal Sales team is responsible for establishing, growing and servicing client relationships with Financial Advisors at wirehouses, regional and independent broker/dealers. The team consists of Sales Analysts, Internal Advisor Consultants, Specialists and Managers all dedicated to our core value, "Clients Come First". Client outreach is accomplished via phone, e-mail, screen-sharing, and at times, in-person meetings (sales territory travel, industry conferences and client due diligence meetings).
Product Managers serve as strategy experts responsible for the development and oversight of the wide variety of PIMCO's investment product areas such as credit, emerging markets, mortgage, long duration, structured products, absolute return, inflation-linked and derivative-based products providing exposure to equities, real estate and commodities. Product Managers take a lead role in the development of new investment strategies and the ongoing support of existing strategies. They work closely with portfolio managers on the development of new investment strategies and often serve as a portfolio manager surrogate in business development and marketing initiatives, including participation in conferences and road shows. In addition, Product Managers actively contribute to the firm's overall investment strategy and economic outlook development process.
Product Associates/Analysts work on various aspects of product management including positioning products across PIMCO's global distribution network, vehicle design and construction, and competitor analysis and pricing. This role has exposure to multiple strategies while allowing individuals to work closely with managers who develop PIMCO products.
The Portfolio Manager is responsible for developing, presenting and executing specific trades in various sectors that are part of PIMCO's overall fixed income strategy. The most important function of this role is to maximize return consistent with client objectives. Other functions of this role include:
Credit Research Analysts analyze various industries and the companies within them and make investment recommendations to PIMCO's portfolio management group. They also provide analytical support for the firm's portfolio managers by highlighting risks and making investment recommendations on specific companies. Credit analysts at PIMCO specialize in a number of industries and cover all levels of the debt capital structure: investment grade bonds, high yield ("junk") bonds, bank debt and convertibles.
Equity Research Analysts conduct rigorous fundamental bottom-up research across all industries globally and have extensive knowledge and experience in financial statement analysis, valuation and qualitative analysis of companies and sectors. This is a global generalist role, with the opportunity to analyze securities in a variety of geographies and industries and across the capital structure.
Global Portfolio Associates/Analysts support an assigned Global Portfolio Manager and or senior Generalist Portfolio Manager on the trade floor. Additionally, the role frequently interacts with Product Management, Legal and Compliance and Operations. Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: building portfolio summaries, monitoring portfolios, performance and attribution analysis, creating reports for risk monitoring, monitoring position weights and product versus client guidelines.
The Cash Desk is responsible for managing cash in client accounts. The team works closely with the Portfolio Management group to determine cash needs and either invests excess cash or raises cash to facilitate purchases. Cash Desk Associate/Analyst responsibilities include: assisting in the administration of the cash management process throughout each day; generating and analyzing daily management and audit reports; and reviewing ways to automate and enhance the current management process. The role frequently works with clients, account managers and the portfolio management group to process client-directed cash contributions and withdrawals. Additionally, an Associate/Analyst works with Short Term traders to invest excess cash or raise cash, and with Custodians and the Accounting group to reconcile cash balances and resolving discrepancies.
PIMCO's Business Management team includes the firm's executive leadership together with several management-focused departments. The Business Management team provides global business leadership, sets firmwide goals and establishes broad strategic initiatives. This team also ensures compliance with portfolio, firm and regulatory guidelines; delivers technology, analytics, accounting, talent management and investment support globally; and manages corporate and client marketing and communications initiatives.
The fast-paced environment at PIMCO requires a high degree of professionalism, organization and detail orientation, coupled with the ability to multitask and prioritize. Administrative Support members are highly professional and detail-oriented and enjoy diversity in their everyday workload.
The PIMCO Funds Business Management Group is responsible for operating public and private fund complexes globally.
The Human Resources team provides support to over 2,400 employees in 13 different offices around the world. HR partners with all PIMCO businesses in identifying, developing and maintaining our talent to drive performance and enrich our culture. The HR team offers a wide variety of services, including recruitment, learning and development, inclusion and diversity, compensation and analytics, and overall generalist consulting and performance management.
The Legal and Compliance Department provides legal and regulatory services to the business, focused on meeting legal and regulatory requirements in the conduct of its business and controlling legal and regulatory risk.
The Marketing team spearheads PIMCO's strategic brand and reputation management. The team is responsible for providing marketing support to the Global Wealth Management, Institutional and Retirement businesses partnering with our sales force and investment colleagues to produce marketing collateral and campaigns. They also manage digital, earned media, paid media, social media, multimedia, messaging and thought leadership content to develop and manage PIMCO's narrative, both internally and externally.
The PIMCO Operations group serves as the infrastructure to provide continuity between PIMCO's portfolio management group and the back office (the back office processes trades as directed by PIMCO's portfolio management team, provides pricing information, ensures settlement, reconciles account information, and more). The team collaborates closely with strategic partners internally and externally, including the trading desks, technology, legal, transitions, custodian banks, brokers, industry groups and service providers.
The Technology team develops proprietary applications to help PIMCO value securities and manage risk. They deliver dynamic and timely solutions using WPF/Silverlight for the user interface, with a diverse set of technologies behind it.

What were your initial impressions of the onboarding process, including networking and exposure to PIMCO's culture?
On my first day at PIMCO, one of the things that surprised me most was the structure in the onboarding process. To be honest, it was somewhat overwhelming at first. There was so much information, so many people to meet and so many things to learn, and the expectation was clear that I should come up to speed as quickly as possible. However, all the colleagues I met were incredibly supportive and open to helping in my transition. Even senior managers spent time with me; it was very refreshing to know how open and accessible our senior leaders are, and that they welcome and appreciate the opportunity to meet with us.
Given your industry experience at the time you joined PIMCO, were your ideas and strengths recognized and built upon in your first weeks and months?
I've worked at three other major financial managers, and nowhere was the process of transitioning into the new role and team as seamless as it is at PIMCO, and never was I able to feel as productive and effective so quickly. The onboarding process was the differentiating critical element. I joined in October, and by November, I was meeting with clients and presenting on PIMCO's outlook. After just half a year, I felt as though I'd been a part of the firm for much longer, in terms of both my knowledge and the contributions I could make.
